Goudey manufactures orange (less transparent amber colour), lemon (more transparent amber colour) and white (transparent) shellac premixed in 2lb cut (ready to use) and 4lb cut. The term “cut” refers to the ratio of dry flake per volume of denatured alcohol. For example, 2 pounds of dry flake to 1 gallon of denatured alcohol is referred to as 2lb cut.
Shellac has been an important part of traditional wood finishing for centuries as a sealing coat for wood under nitrocellulose lacquers, traditional alkyd varnishes, waxes, and oil finishes. True European style French polishing is done by padding on thin layers of shellac to a wood surface. The deep amber colour of Lemon Shellac is ideal for simulating antique patinas in between coats of nitrocellulose lacquers or traditional alkyd varnishes. Shellac can be applied by cheesecloth pad, brush, and spray equipment.
